CSI Officials Certification Page

This page has been set up to allow interested people in Colorado to begin the process of certification. CSI meets or exceeds all the minimum standard guidelines for officials certification as set by USS.  The normal process for a beginning Stroke and Turn Official is to go to a Clinic.  These clinics are taught in most parts of the state.  We however can not get everywhere.  We hope to provide as much of the clinic material as possible online.   In all cases you will still need to go to a clinic and pay your membership fees to USS to become fully certified as a Stroke and Turn official.

This page also provides clinic material for Starters and Referees.  There are also many great articles which are on the CSI Officials home page.

Once you have gone through the material plus the clinic and have taken and passed the Stroke and Turn Test, Clerk of Course Test, and Timers Test you will need 24 hours of deck time to become fully certified.  There is a trainees log sheet on this page as well for you to use at sanctioned meets to obtain your 24 hours.  It must be signed by a certified referee.  You will also find on this page forms for ordering an official's shirt.  We require white shirts and navy pants or shorts and white shoes for you to be on deck plus your USS membership card.  To get your membership card, print the Non-Athlete Registration Form, fill it out and mail it with a check for the amount you calculate on the form to Colorado Swimming.  The address is on the form as well.  To get started on your Starter or Referee certification you will need to meet the standard guidelines (see the CSI requirements on the Guidelines page ), pass the appropriate tests, attend a clinic and at least three sessions as a trainee in that position plus the recommendations of the referee's for those sessions.

Starting in the Fall of 2001 all Officials must take the Stroke and Turn Recertification Test.  You can  take it online as part of the USA Swimming Officials Certification Tests at http://www.usaswimming.org/USASWeb/DesktopDefault.aspx?TabId=690&Alias=R ainbow&Lang=en .  We strongly encourage you to not only take the Stroke and Turn Recertification Test but others as well.

Rules

The following download is a replica of the first part of the USS Rule Book.  As it can take some time for your membership to be processed and get the real rules book,  this document will help you get through the tests.  If you can borrow a book from an official do so, this download is about 3.6 meg.  You will need a PDF Reader to view it and print it.  If you are working on your starter or referee certification, you should already have a book and do not need the part I.  The full rules book is online and listed below for download.

Reading Material and Forms

The following is the list of training materials and forms you will need to get started on the certification process.

Recertification

CSI procedures for recertification have many variations.  The simplest is that you work 26 sessions in a year (about two and a half cards) and pass the Stroke and Turn Recertification Test. You must complete at least 10 (6 for seasonal) sessions for the following.

  1. Work three sessions at a State Championship and attend the Officials meeting before and after each session.
  2. Attend a recertification clinic.
  3. Take the recertification tests.

If you do not work that many sessions you have one choice, attend a full clinic and retake all full tests for the appropriate level and recommendations from past referees you have worked with.

If your certification has lapsed a year you must go to a clinic and take the appropriate full tests (all areas you want to recertify in), again previous referee's you have worked with must provide a positive recomendation.

Transfers are handled differently.  Your previous LSC must send your credentials and recomendation of the LSC Officials Chair or their representatives.  If the certification has lapsed a year then the process is the same as above.
